The client had a wealth of ideas for new or improved products. The large number of ideas led to difficulty selecting the ideas to develop beyond the concept stage in the product development process. When the project started the client was spending $500,000 to $1,000,000 and taking six to twelve months to evaluate each idea. The cost and time hurdle led to deadlock as the organization debated the selection of ideas to evaluate.
We worked with the client to assess the concept phase of their product development process. Numerous steps were identified that added little or no value to the outcome of the evaluation. In addition our assessment revealed the level of information being obtained was far beyond that needed to decide whether to move and idea forward. We reduced the size of the team involved in each evaluation and developed simplified the evaluation process.
Our method was evaluated in a paired comparison where the same was idea through the existing process and the process we developed. The results of the simplified process were comparable or better than the existing process. The new process was conducted in less than three months with a cost reduction of over 70%.
