Performance Metrics
A client had developed a five-year strategic plan, including core objectives and initiatives, but needed a way to measure progress against them. They also needed a method of tying objective and initiative results to individuals' performance plans.
By working closely with their objective and initiative owners, process (leading) and performance (lagging) metrics were identified. This was done by facilitating brainstorm discussions that would surface the metrics to truly measure progress against the initiatives and objectives. In some cases they were process (leading) metrics. In others, a lagging, performance metric was more appropriate. After the metrics were identified, they were reviewed and the list then shortened, to focus on the “critical few”. Once this was done, each key metric was discussed to identify who, when and how each metric would be recorded. Many of the metrics already existed and were currently being measured, but a few were new and required some effort to begin measuring.
The strategic plan metrics are now reviewed on a quarterly basis to assess progress, as well as determine if any management adjustments are needed. The metric results are also being incorporated quarterly into the personal objectives section of personal performance reviews for all the members of the organization’s leadership team.
