Portfolio Management
A client, after implementing a strategic planning process, was very interested in developing and utilizing a project portfolio management process to help them align projects with their strategic plan. Their current approach was very informal, and decisions left them wondering what they were giving up by choosing certain projects.
By worked closely with the client’s senior leaders, a design team was formed to develop and implement a portfolio management process that was closely aligned with their strategic plan initiatives. This was done by establishing a project request document, and then creating and managing their portfolio projects list. This list was then reviewed and discussed monthly at a leadership level.
Today the client’s organization has a list of portfolio projects that’s very visible, and reviewed and updated regularly. This list contains both approved and potential projects. They also have a method of identifying potential projects and testing alignment with their strategic plan. And finally, a clear decision making process has been incorporated, including when and how to communicate when a project is approved.
